Part 36

 Chapter 31:

Verse 1.   “And he heard the words of Laban’s sons, saying, Jacob hath taken away all that was our father’s; and of that which was our father’s hath he gotten all this glory.”

Verse 2.    “And Jacob beheld the countenance of Laban, and behold, it was not turned toward him as before.

Verse 3.    “And the Lord said unto Jacob. Return unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred, and I will be with thee.”

Verse 4.    “And Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field unto his flock.

This is when Jacob has decided to take off with Rachel, and his sons, and all his flocks, everything. Rachel takes the images from her father’s tent and puts them underneath the seat of her camel. The images of Laban are really the spiritual powers, the power of imaging. One of our spiritual powers is this ability to image, this is what Rachel takes and hides. The power to image can be used in two ways, for good, or for evil. Some people actually image evil things about others, such as voodoo. Laban was concerned that now Jacob had learned this secret of his teaching, he still was not sure how Jacob would use it. Laban takes off after him to give him a test. Jacob was completely clueless because he had no concept of imaging for evil in any way. He just enjoyed playing with the psychic. When Laban discovered this he lets Jacob go on his way, after extracting a covenant from him that he will go forth and use the spiritual teaching that he has acquired for the good of his tribe and of mankind. This is when he goes on his way ‘pitching tents’ and ‘digging wells’. Going up into higher consciousness for a while and releasing spiritual activity. Next Jacob is to meet up with Esau whom he has not seen since he stole his blessing from him. He has left the rarified atmosphere of Laban, the school and his spiritual training and has come back to face the world again. Isn’t this what we have to do when we attend classes and then have to put it into practice out in the world. The world is Esau (the physical), and he is scared when he comes up against Esau and the material world again.
So this is what happens:

Chapter 32

Verse 1.   “And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.”

Verse 2.    “And when Jacob saw them, he said, this is God’s host, and he called the name of the place Mahanaim (spiritual ideas and mental realm of man).”

Verse 3.    “And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir (physical consciousness), the country of Edom (carnal physical phase of man).”

Verse 4.   “And he commanded them saying, thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:”

Verse 5.    “And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and women servants; and I have sent to tell my Lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.

Verse 6.   “And the messengers returned to Jacob saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.”

Verse 7.    “Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camel, into two bands;”

Verse 8.  “And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.”

How we hedge our bets!!!

Verse 9.   “And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the Lord which saidst unto me, Return unto they country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee;”

Verse 10.   ”I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast showed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.”

People tend to think that the physical has to become spiritualized. In other words, the spirit has to come down to the physical level and spiritualize the body. This is what Jacob is looking at; he thought that this was what was expected of him. What he has to do is the opposite; he has to bring the physical body into alignment and harmony with the spiritual. This then is the two bands, the double mindedness. He has to decide which route he is going to take.

Verse 11.    “Deliver me I pray thee from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, (he doesn’t want to go down in the physical, he knows what should be done, but he is afraid he wont be able to do it): for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.”

Verse 12.    “And thou sadist, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitudes.”

Verse 13.    “And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;”

Verse 14.  “Two hundred she goats and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,”

Verse 15.    “Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine and ten bulls, twenty she asses and ten foals.”

Verse 16.   “And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.”

We do things little by little; we cannot do everything all at once. But he is trying to tithe to his brother. Don’t we do this to God or the church in the hope of getting something in return?? This leads to his next adventure.

Verse 22.  “And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two women servants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok (flowing rapidly – therefore spirit).”

Verse 23.    “And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.”

Verse 24.   “And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of day.”

Jacob is wrestling his lower self

Verse 25.   “And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.”

The mind controls the body through the thoughts acting upon the nerves. The sciatic nerve runs through the leg at the hollow of the thigh, the will acts directly through this nerve. Jacob finally realized that the body was indeed the temple of God, and he made his peace with Esau. He realized that the body was indeed the temple of God, and he made his peace with Esau. He realized that the body was already spirit; he just had to recognize it.

Verse 26.   “And he said, Let me go, for the day breath. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.”

He finally came to the fact that you have to bless the body for it is spirit already, and that this was to be his future way of life.

Verse 27.   “And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.”

Verse 28.    “And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel (ruling with God): for as a prince thou hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.”

Verse 29.    “And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.”

Verse 30.  “And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel (turned towards God, face of God): for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”

Verse 31.    “And as he passed over Peniel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.”

Verse 32.   “Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew that shrank.”

I have dealt in depth with this story, as it is so importantly relevant to our lives as they should be lived today.

The symbolism is that the wrestling or battle has shrunk up to nothing. When we face our battles they are as nothing. All that we have to do is align ourselves with the spirit we already are. We do not have to wrestle to be anything, or do anything, we already are spirit and our body is already the temple of God. All we have to do is recognize it. That is finally what Jacob did. Recognizing the name was not needed, he just had to bless what he was. Then he became Israel, he was going to rule with God. Troward said that Israel represents Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. A change in name means a change in consciousness, and he had made a big step, a big change in consciousness. He had overcome his fear of the physical. His fear of Esau is gone and he goes to meet Esau and becomes friends with him.

Now is when Rachel has her second son called Benjamin (right thinking). It is at this point that Jacob finally has his mind straight, he has everything in Divine order, and he is on the path of right thinking. He also has a daughter by Leah, and remember, this is his spiritual result. Her name is Dinah (justified) an odd meaning but we will see next time how this played out.
